Why is does it matter?

Foam Density
EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene) foam is a molded product that is then cut down to differing sizes. Its density is the amount of EPS bead is contains per cubic foot (pcf). The denser the foam is affects how energy efficient it is, how much static loading (snowloading, non-walk-on) it can handle, and how much water it will absorb. Denser foam cores will be more energy efficient, handle more static loading, and absorb less water than a lighter counterpart.

Does the cover have 2" of fall?
Simply stated, we feel that the cover needs 2" of fall to adequately shed water off of it. Standing water on a spa cover will eventually bow and/or break the foam core. Our Thermal Guardian covers feature a 2" fall difference in their tapers to adequately shed water.

Vapor Barrier
The thicker the barrier, the longer it takes the gassed-off spa chemicals to break it down causing it to become porous. This directly translates into how long it will take for the foam core to become completely water-logged. Thermal Guardian covers feature 6 mil. vapor barriers.

Double-Stitched Seams
It takes longer to do and thus more expensive to manufacture, but it's worth it from a structure and aesthetics standpoint.

ASTM 1346-91
This standard becoming required by many municipalities in their building codes. It defines a pool and spa cover. It contains labeling requirements as well as a center-deflection, perimeter rescue test. All Thermal Guardian spa covers are manufactured in accordance with the ASTM 1346-91 specification.
